Pre & probiotics for horses

PRE & PROBIOTICS

PREBIOTICS – A NON-LIVING feed ingredient that promotes the growth of micro-organisms that have a beneficial effect on gastro-intestinal function and or health.

PROBIOTICS – LIVE micro-organisms (essentially LIVE bacteria or LIVE yeasts) that beneficially affects the host animal by improving its intestinal microbial balance.

SYNBIOTICS – this is a relatively new term for when PROBIOTICS and PREBIOTICS are given together.

BENEFITS - The benefits of feeding pre and probiotics to horses include stabilisation of the conditions in the hindgut which stimulates and improves fibre digestion resulting in improvements in feed conversion, nutrient uptake and overall digestive efficiency.

When feeding live yeast-based probiotics to horses it is essential that they are fed in a form which protects them from stomach acid so they reach the hindgut alive. We use a protected live yeast, which is capable of withstanding acidic conditions, but will then be broken down in the hindgut releasing the beneficial bacteria.  Supplementing with Maxia Digest can have the following benefits for horses that are:

  • Under stress
  • Prone to colic or laminitis
  • Develop digestive upset with pasture changes such as in Spring and Autumn
  • On medications
  • Around the time of worming
  • When changes to the diet are made
  • Poor doers
  • Older horses
  • Horses that develop loose droppings

Maxia Digest contains the following research proven pre and probiotics:

Probiotic Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077 Micro Encapsulated live yeast (LevucellSC) selected for its capacity to optimise hindgut (the site of microbial fibre digestion) function in horses and enhance the natural process of digestion.   Limits undesirable changes in the intestinal microbial ecosystem, helps to stabilise the gut microflora in stressful conditions, optimise feed digestibility & aid healthy probiotic development.

Prebiotic Oligofructose are selectively fermented ingredients that nourish and stimulate growth of beneficial bacteria, benefiting the horse by enhancing the absorption and retention of certain minerals, which in turn can support the immune system and skeletal tissue.  Helps to improve the survival, implantation and growth of newly added probiotic strains.

Prebiotic Mannan-Oligosaccharides Enriched Yeast Fractions help to bind pathogens and limit their adhesion to the gastro intestinal tract, allowing the development of a beneficial microflora able to use Mannans as an energy source.  Contributes to the regulation of the intestinal flora to allow optimal nutrient absorption, enhancing digestibility and supporting immune response.  Helps to improve the survival, implantation and growth of newly added probiotic strains & healthy probiotic creation.
